Here is a collection of resources that could be useful for any groups that want to work on improving access to healthy foods in their communities, neighborhoods, systems, institutions or other food environments, using environmental and policy change approaches.

We’ve also included a few sites at the end of the list that summarize research linking nutrition to health and that offer tools for individuals who want to improve their eating patterns.

Healthy Eating by Design (HEbD)/Active Living by Design (ALbD) HEbD seeks to increase access to healthy foods for children in low income communities and schools. Twelve ALbD community partnerships were selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to test approaches to provide affordable, healthy and appealing food options in low income communities.
HEbD Poster using Community Action Model and 5P Strategies This Healthy Eating by Design poster summarizes a multi-strategy framework for improving access to healthy foods, and ultimately increasing healthy eating behaviors to improve health status. Related resources help explain the model and strategies.
Washington State Department of Health-Nutrition and Physical Activity: A Policy Resource Guide This policy guide from the Washington Department of Health is intended to be a starting point for development of policy. It provides an overview of sample policies and discusses their effectiveness.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Policy Resources This page provides links to model school wellness policies plus a state-based searchable database that provides legislation information pertaining to nutrition, physical activity and obesity.
CDC Guide to Community Preventive Services This guide includes systematic reviews of the effectiveness of selected population-based interventions that address a variety of health-related areas, including nutrition and obesity.
Healthy Eating Active Communities (HEAC) Healthy Eating, Active Communities is a four-year, $26 million program sponsored by The California Endowment. It aims to fight the growing childhood obesity epidemic in California and to develop state policy changes that will reduce the risk factors for diabetes and obesity.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) RWJF has a major funding effort underway to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. Strategies: improving access to affordable healthy foods and increasing opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities across the nation.
W.K.Kellogg Foundation’s Food and Fitness Initiative The Food & Fitness Initiative is working with nine communities nationwide to make healthy eating and physical activity convenient, affordable, and safe for children and families. Initiatives address both the built environment and the food system.
Eat Smart Move More North Carolina Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina is a statewide movement that promotes increased opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity in communities, schools businesses and faith communities. The website includes resources, success stories, and learning opportunities.
Missouri Foundation for Health’s Healthy & Active Communities (H&AC) The H&AC initiative targets community-based organizations with the specific objective of reaching populations who are at increased risk of developing obesity, such as women and children, racial and ethnic groups, and low-income individuals or families.
Environmental Nutrition and Activity Community Tool (ENACT) A concrete menu of strategies and resources designed to help improve nutrition and activity environments on a local level. ENACT can serve as a tool for community assessment and also for monitoring progress toward improving food and physical activity environments.
ENACT Local Policy Database This online database contains sample local policies that have improved opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity nationwide.
Healthy Corner Stores Network Organizations that participate in this network promote the sale of healthy, fresh, affordable foods in small, neighborhood stores in underserved communities.
Community Food Security Coalition A North American coalition dedicated to building strong, sustainable, local and regional food systems that ensure universal access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.
The Food Trust This organization both responds to the epidemic of diet-related disease and malnutrition, and addresses the systemic issues that prevent food and farming systems from adequately meeting nutrition needs.
Health Care Without Harm An international coalition committed to transforming the health care sector to become ecologically sustainable and to not harm public health. The coalition’s Food Work Group has many resources for health care institutions that are interested in implementing more nutritious and environmentally sustainable food purchasing practices.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation A partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation to fight childhood obesity. The Alliance supports schools around the country in implementing nutrition standards and making other improvements in the school nutrition environment.
Action for Healthy Kids A nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools nationwide. Action for Healthy Kids has a database of school district nutrition policies from around the country.
Project LEAN This California program focuses on youth empowerment, policy and environmental change strategies, and community-based solutions to increase healthy eating and physical activity. Project LEAN has a variety of resources to assist students, teachers, parents, and staff in making changes in the school nutrition and physical activity environment. The project also has created a manual for working with school boards on nutrition and physical activity policy.
National Farm to School Program A collaborative program that has spearheaded the development of the farm to school movement across the country. The website lists programs around the country and offers resources for establishing a farm to school program.
Center for Science in the Public Interest – Nutrition Policy Resources Policy information and resources on restaurant menu labeling legislation, trans fat bans, school food policies, food and beverage marketing practices, and more.
Harvard School of Public Health A clear summary of current research on the health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption.
U.S. CDC's Nutrition for Everyone Nutrition for Everyone, provided by the The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has tip sheets on nutrition and links to several government programs.
myPyramid This interactive site allows individuals to track their nutrition and net energy balance by inputting foods eaten, activity level, and age group.
Fruits & Veggies This CDC site offers tips, recipes and interactive tools designed to help individuals include more fruits and vegetables in their daily fare.
USDA resources A wealth of resources and databases on a variety of nutrition-related topics.
