Why encourage Minnesotans to get active? For starters, physical activity can help people live longer, healthier lives. Regular physical activity reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis. Yet, only half of adults in the state are moderately physically active.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity most—preferably all—days of the week. If all adults in Minnesota achieved that recommendation, we could expect to see 30 percent fewer cases of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer and osteoporosis. An added benefit—we look better and feel better.
Our goal: Increase physical activity by 50%. Measurement: Increase from 49% to 75% the proportion of adult Minnesotans who report that they meet or exceed 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five or more days per week.
