Policy change can be a powerful tool to help support individual commitments to health with community and state initiatives that reduce health risks or support healthy behaviors. Here’s additional background information related to the Center’s public policy priorities.

Minnesota’s Clean Indoor Air Act In Minnesota, the Clean Indoor Air Act of 1974 was updated in 2003 to include most factories, warehouses and other places of employment exempted from the original legislation. However, the exception for restaurants and bars was not removed. The Freedom to Breathe act passed in 2007, which virtually eliminated the option to smoke in restaurants, bars and workplaces.
Secondhand smoke protection and tax increase: recommended strategies The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends comprehensive clean indoor air ordinances and tobacco excise increases as effective strategies. Review the original recommendations.
