Policy changes can make Minnesotans healthier
Policy change influences the behavior of an entire population. That’s much more efficient (and cost effective) than trying to persuade one kid at a time to not start smoking. Or one couple at a time to start walking regularly. Policy initiativesThe Center for Prevention is collaborating with various partners on four policy change initiatives: Promoting and defending the Minnesota's Freedom to Breathe Act. Increasing the state’s tobacco excise tax. Encouraging policymakers to elevate prevention as an explicit health improvement and a health care cost containment strategy. Promoting community design modifications to encourage walking and biking.
Policy change makes health sense — and economic senseFrom smoke-free workplaces to accessible, attractive walking routes, it makes good health sense — and economic sense — to help remove barriers to better health. Why not use policy change to create community conditions that help individuals choose and sustain health-improving behaviors?
